G8 Summit

After more than a year of preparation, the G8 meeting of 10 global leaders is here. Thousands of people are going to learn about Georgia’s coastal cities of Brunswick, St. Simons, Sea Island and Savannah. The headquarters for newspapers, radio, and television stations from all over the world will be located in Savannah. But why are all these people coming? Why are the leaders meeting? What are they talking about?

If you study the cover of the magazine or the website at www.g8.usa.gov, you will find that there are 10 pictures of world leaders. Can you match the leader to his nation’s flag? The leaders are George W. Bush, President of the United States, Paul Martin, President of Canada, Tony Blair, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Bertie Ahern, the President of Ireland and the leader of the European Union, and Romano Prodi, former President of Italy and head of the European Commission.

Leaders from France, Italy, Germany, Russia and Japan will also attend. They will meet to talk about our world and how to make it a safe and beautiful place for all the people living in their countries. They will meet as friends to work together to provide peace and preserve the environment for every person on earth.
