Georgia’s State Parks & Historic Sites have an array of Georgia’s wildlife to view and rocks and minerals to hold. If it has to do with Georgia, you can bet that you will find it at a Georgia State Park!

Where you might see Georgia State Symbols:

FISH - Largemouth Bass. This species can be found in large lakes and is a favorite among fishermen.

BIRD - Brown Thrasher-The chestnut brown bird has a long tail and is most commonly seen on the ground.

GAME BIRD – Bobwhite Quail- This small brown bird is found in native longleaf pine (our state pine tree) and tall grass stands, such as those seen in Seminole State Park.

TREE - Live Oak- The sprawling branches of these evergreens are frequently draped with Spanish moss. Look for them along the dramatic driveway at Wormsloe State Historic Site. These are scattered throughout many coastal state parks and historic sites.

FLOWER – Cherokee -The Cherokee Rose was cultivated from China. It was cultivated by the Cherokee Indians in 1780. It flourishes in the warm climate of Georgia’s coastal regions.

FOSSIL -Shark tooth- Observant hikers might see these on the beach at Sapelo Island Estuarine Reserve and the sandy trails at Fort McAllister State Park.

INSECT -Honeybee- Get a close look at hives in actions at Providence Canyon State Park.

BUTTERFLY -Tiger Swallowtail – On warm sunny days, look for this yellow and black butterfly flitting across Georgia.

MARINE MAMMAL - Right Whale- These warm blooded swimmers got their name because they were the “right whale to kill.” Today, they are a protected species that can sometimes be seen off Georgia’s coast.

REPTILE - Gopher Tortoise - These large and quick turtles can be seen burrowing in the sandhills at Reed Bingham, General Coffee, Little Ocmulgee and other south Georgia parks.
